To me, the biggest surprise was Pablo Sandoval. Most people thought that Wright would go in as the starting third baseman. He definitely has the numbers and was leading the votes for the starter as of last Monday. However, Sandoval and the Giants have been on a tear as of late and are currently in first place in the NL West. I’m of fan of the Kung Fu Panda and am happy for him.

Speaking of third baseman, I really hope you will join me in voting for Chipper Jones at the 34th Man. I think it’d be another great way to send him out in his final season. If you need to be convinced, I think you should read my Bleacher Report article on this very subject.

Voting for the 34th Man ends at 4 PM ET on July 5th.

The All Star Game takes place in Kansas City on July 10th.

Feeling Chipper

Dun uh, dun uh, dun uh (ay, ay, ay)…

When any baseball fan hears that bass line blare over the speakers at Turner Field, they know who is coming to the plate. Much like a pro wrestler coming down the ramp, the music sets a tone. It gets the home crowd amped and they express themselves vocally. Fans hearing “Crazy Train” expect something big to happen.

Once Chipper announced his retirement, I immediately knew I’d write a blog about it. I decided to wait until the season started. Watching Chipper play his final season would give me perspective. So far, he’s playing like a 25 year old, other than taking days off to rest the knee. When he’s playing, you’d never guess he has had six knee surgeries, let alone one during Spring Training. He is hitting .307 with 5 home runs and 24 RBI. It seems like after every game he plays after a day off, he hits a homer. Seeing Chipper play like this makes it harder to believe he’ll retire at season’s end. But, he is 40 and playing 19 seasons have taken its toll on his body. After seeing what happened to Mariano Rivera and Lance Berkman, it was just a reminder of what could happen to Chipper, especially with surgically repaired knees.

Back in the summer in 1996, I was reintroduced to baseball. I loved all the Braves, but Ryan Klesko, Javy Lopez, and Chipper Jones were my favorites. As a Braves fan, I could always count on Chipper holding down third base and batting in the three hole. Sometimes, we could count on knee high socks. After Bobby Cox retired, he left a hole in the heart of Braves Country. As long as Chipper was there, we didn’t notice how big it really was. Now Chipper is joining the only coach he has ever played for. It’ll be hard to ignore that hole in 2013. In fact, it will be even larger.

Some of my favorite Chipper memories are off the field. Rearranging his contract so that there was enough money so that the Braves could sign more elite talent, moving to left field so that Vinny Castilla could play third base, and laughing hysterically at Brian McCann’s triple. In 1999, I remember rooting for him to win the MVP and was so happy he finally did. I still have the ChopTalk with him on the cover in a tux holding his trophy. I still think that he was robbed of the Rookie of the Year when finished second to Hideo Nomo. At least one of them is headed to Cooperstown.

Even with the numbers, records and MVP award, it seemed like Chipper was overlooked outside of Braves Country. As Chipper has visited opposing ballparks for the final time, the teams have been recognizing what Chipper and his career mean. The Astros presented him with a white cowboy hat. The Cubs gave him one of the Braves flags that flew over Wrigley Field. The Cardinals bestowed a large framed picture of Chipper at bat at Busch Stadium. It was signed by several people, including Tony LaRussa. He also received an autographed Stan “The Man” Musial jersey. The opposing fans have also shown their respect in classy way. At Wrigley, Chipper stood at the top of the dugout during the final out. The fans directly behind the dugout stood and cheered for Chipper. It soon spread into a standing ovation by all fans in attendance. The St. Louis fans also continually showed their respect and admiration. Everytime Chipper’s name was announced, they loudly cheered for him. It’s wonderful to see Chipper get the recognition he deserves by baseball fans all over the country.

I will get the opportunity to show my appreciation in person next month. I’ll be attending game one of the Yankees/Braves series. I’m hoping that Chipper will be playing. Hopefully, we’ll be able to attend one more game this season. I look forward to watching Chipper enjoy the last games of his career, padding his resume and more importantly, entertaining the fans.

Thank you, Chipper. Thank you for everything.

Meeting “Murph”

My grandpa, Ben (Papa), is a huge Braves fan and passed his love onto his granddaughters. In the 80s, the best and most popular Brave was Dale Murphy. Every time he came to bat, Papa would call my cousin Amy & I into the room. When the camera would show him at the plate, we would hug & kiss the TV. No, I am not ashamed to write that sentence publically.

Murphy has remained one of my favorite players. He has always represented the Braves and baseball with the utmost class. After his playing career ended, he founded the “I Won’t Cheat” foundation. They promote non-steroid use and ethical behavior by young athletes. He also calls a handful of Braves games along with public speaking engagements. Murphy also interacts with his fans on Twitter (@dalemurphy3).

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to meet Murphy. The Charlotte Knights were playing a three game series versus the Gwinnett Braves. They also hosted a meet and greet with Murphy. Purchasing a ticket to Friday night’s game gave the fans the chance to attend the event. Gates opened at 6 PM and Murphy began signing in the plaza at the same time. Knowing there would be many fans there, Amy & I arrived around 5:15 PM. There were about 30 people ahead of us. As the clock approached 6, the line grew longer and longer. Finally, we were able to enter the ballpark. Some fans ran past us (mostly kids) to get in line. As we waited in line, I saw Murphy walking to the table. It became more real that this was really happening. Because of the amount of people that were participating in the meet and greet, they only allowed one item to be signed per person. We were also not permitted to take photos with Murphy. I was disappointed, but I understood why.

The line moved quickly & before I knew it, it was Amy’s turn. While Murphy signed her baseball card, I snapped a couple photos. Before I knew it, it was my turn. I handed Murphy my baseball card and he said “hello” and asked how I was. I think I replied that I was doing well. He handed me back the card and I thanked him for signing it and he thanked me for coming. It all happened very quickly, but it is something I’ll never forget. Dale Murphy was so nice and was everything that I expected. Before the game, Murphy threw the first pitch. He stopped the meet and greet long enough to do his duties. As we walked toward the Braves dugout, he “chopped” the fans on this visitors’ side. He resumed his meet and greet. I believe that he signed autographs through the sixth inning.

The Braves ended up winning 3-0. A perfect ending for a perfect night.

Signed a big contract? Make an appointment with your local sports psychologist.

So, I’ve been kicking this topic around since just before I started blogging here. Let me make something clear, I think athletes are WAY overpaid. It’s ridiculous. I love sports, but no one should make the absurd amounts that many make for swinging a bat, catching a football, dribbling a basketball…well, you get the idea. Obviously, in our society, this practice isn’t going to change.

In this blog, I’ll be discussing several high priced baseball players. Should athletes with large contracts be required by the team signing their paychecks to see a sports psychologist? Y-E-S. Once a player puts his John Hancock on his expensive contract, he is seen by many as the piece of paper he just signed. He is no longer a mere mortal. He must be perfect or close enough for the length of his contract. If he is not, he’s a bust and/or lazy.

Granted, if a team is going to fork over that much money, certain expectations are fair. You hope to get what you pay for.  Most of us mere humans would feel intense pressure if we were given the type of money some players make.  I think most people would always have in the back of their mind, “I can’t screw up, even in the slightest, because I’m being paid a buttload (that’s right, buttload) of money, just to perform my job.”

One player that comes to mind with a gigantic contract is Kevin Brown. ‘Memba him? He played on the 1997 World Champion Florida Marlins team. Following his championship season, he signed a $105 million seven year contract. That contract= baseball’s first million dollar man.  ESPN Deportes anchor, Enrique Rojas stated the contract “one of the worst deals ever from a team’s point of view’ because Brown averaged only nine wins per season and was frequently injured during the seven years of the deal (wikipedia.org). “ By 2003, Brown was sent packing to the New York Yankees.  He famously punched a wall after a meeting with skipper Joe Torre and broke his hand, thus leaving him unable to pitch the rest of the season. Just four years after becoming a Yankee, Brown retired.  There are rumors he was on steroids, which could contribute to why he was done with the game, but that’s a whole other topic.

MLB's first million dollar man

The player who keeps coming up when there is talk of not living up to his contract is Barry Zito. In 2002, he was awarded the Cy Young Award (AL).  In 2006, he signed with the San Francisco Giants. He was awarded a seven year deal worth $126 million with an option for 2018 worth $14 million and a $7 million buyout. Since becoming a Giant, Zito has not lived up to what one would expect him to. He has flashes of who he was as an Oakland A, but it hasn’t been consistent.

Last season was the first time that Zito spent any time of the disabled list for the first time in his MLB career. That’s quite an accomplishment.  He first went to the DL after being involved in a car accident. He came back briefly. During his third start of the year, he landed wrong on his foot and took a tumble off the mound and caused him to sprain his ankle. Zito finished 2011 a miserable 3-4 with a 5.87 ERA (cbssports.com).

Zito has struggled since signing with the Giants in 2006.

Take a couple of minutes to read this article from Grantland: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6832278/the-end-barry-zito. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Done?  How does that make you feel? I realize that some of you reading don’t give a crap about Barry Zito, the person or any other player for that matter. But, for those of you who still realizes these guys playing for us day in and day out are still humans, this probably makes you feel sad. Or at least some sort of empathy. For those of you who didn’t read said article, here are the two most important paragraphs in the entire story and pretty much nail the point of this blog. Instead, in the coming days and months and years, all that weight, all that expectation, all that godforsaken math, it pushed Barry — Barry, not Zito — off his delicate and particular balance. Those numbers meant that he would never again be consciously unconscious. He would never again be able to feel his way through his life; now he could only calculate the value of it, when all people ever had to do was watch him throw his curveball and they would know exactly what he was worth.

That’s the real tragedy of Barry Zito. It’s not that he was reduced to a mathematical proof in the winter of 2006. It’s that in the summer of 2011, he has become one: Sometimes the sum of faith and belief and love still isn’t nearly enough.”

Think he needs to see a sports psychologist now? How about way back when Scott Boras’ computer and binder predicted Zito would be the next Maddux?  In most cases, agents are not going to look after their client’s mental state, as long as they’re not suicidal. If an agent isn’t going to look after his client’s state of mind, the team has too. They are the ones making the investment in him after all. They should require players to see a sports psychologist before the ink dries on that massive, ridiculous contract.  Yes, that includes Albert Pujols.  After last season, Jayson Werth further proves my point. Even Dan Uggla, who set an Atlanta Braves record by hitting in 33 consecutive games & only hit a measley .233 in the first season of his 5 year/$62.2 million contract, should have a sports psychologist on speed dial.

The player should see a sports psychologist frequently. In the offseason, before spring training, early in the season, midseason and at the end of the season. If the player is having issues, on field or off, guess who they get to chat with? Those are only the required visits. A sports psychologist should be available for a player whenever needed. It’s worth it for everyone involved to have a player’s mentality taken care of. Remind them that they are a person first and a player second.

It’s ok to be human.

Reliving the NKOTBSB concert

Way back in my first, I stated that the blog would cover all types of subjects. Thus far, it’s been all baseball, all the time.  Today will be my first music related blog. You’re probably well aware that Nikki and I went to Greensboro on Saturday to see the NKOTBSB concert. It was Nikki’s b-day gift from me. I couldn’t help but tweet during the show. Several of those tweets were retweeted by others (I’ll put RT next to it).  I know by last blog contained my tweets during the event, but whatever.

Here goes a recap of the awesomeness.

Finally made it to Greensboro for @nkotb& @bsb! Grabbing dinner at Wendy’s before gates open.

Wow, some of these girls have no business wearing what they have on. And we’re still at Wendy’s. #Peoplewatching (RT)

I think Matthew Morrison only knows one dance move bc he does it repeatedly. #Nkotbsb

Wait, he busted out a new move for “Gold Digger”. Really this song (after “Mrs. Robinson”)? #Nkotbsb (RT)

Some ppl are giving him a standing O. Wow. I will say his MJ dancing was better than his Gene Kelly & Patrick Swayze.

I really enjoyed the All Star Game this year. I thought the tributes were really nice. I really wish they had done something to for Brian Stowe & Shannon Stone, though.

I decided to recap the ASG by posting what I tweeted about it. I did this a couple times for the school newspaper. It seemed to work out pretty well.  Don’t forget to follow me: @Samantha_1675

If You Invite Them, The Homers Will Come

Monday night’s Home Run Derby kicked off the All Star Break festivities (at least on TV. They truly started on Sunday with the Taco Bell Legends & Celebrity Softball game). Country superstar, Jason Aldean, kicked of the celebration by performing “Crazytown” (only MLB Network viewers saw this one) and “My Kinda Party” (only on ESPN).  I had to wait until the softball game to see Aldean wearing a jersey & Braves cap (see this blog).

David Ortiz (AL) and Prince Fielder (NL) were captains of their league and for the first time ever, the captains chose the participants. Fielder was heavily booed when he was announced for not selecting the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Justin Upton.

My prediction for the AL player with most HRs was Jose Bautista and Matt Kemp for the NL. Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez started off the Derby. Manny Acta, manager of the Cleveland Indians, pitched for Gonzalez. That proved to be a great choice as Gonzalez belted nine dingers. The furthest was measured at 447”.

Next up was the Cardinals’ Matt Holliday. His catcher, Yadier Molina was the pitcher of choice. This was Holliday’s first time participating in the derby and it showed. He wasn’t very patient and only connected for five homers. His longest was 443”.

New York Yankees’ second baseman (which was mentioned repeatedly throughout the night), Robinson Cano followed Holliday. His dad (and former Houston Astros pitcher), Jose Cano was his pitcher. Cano’s sweet swing landed him eight home runs. He also socked the longest home run of the night at 472”.

Rickie Weeks of the Milwaukee Brewers also played in his first derby.  His pitcher was the Brew Crew’s hitting coach, Sandy Guerrero. Weeks had the same problem as Holliday and went yard three times. His longest HR measured in at 427”.

Toronto’s Jose Bautista came in with probably the most pressure. He leads the majors in HRs and was the leading vote getter in both leagues to play in this year’s All Star Game. The Blue Jays bullpen catcher, Alex Andreopolous pitched to Bautista. Bautista hit just four home runs, which eliminated him from advancing to the next round.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder, Matt Kemp, was also a first timer. He leads in the NL in home runs. His pitcher of choice was Rob Flippo, the Dodgers bullpen catcher. Kemp, like Weeks and Holliday, was also impatient at the plate. He belted just two homers. His longest was 427”.

If you’re keeping score, both of my picks did not advance past round one.

American League captain and Red Sox DH, David Ortiz also used Jose Cano as his pitcher. Ortiz hit five homers, tying Holliday. He smacked his longest one at 452” feet. The Brewers Prince Fielder closed out round one. He was heavily booed once more. Guerrero also pitched for Fielder. He ended up with five homers as well. His furthest also went 452”.

At the end of round one, Holliday, Ortiz & Fielder were tied with five. In order to move to round two, they had to have a swing off. Each player got a total of five swings. Whomever had the most home runs at the end of the swing off advanced (any HRs hit in the swing off did not count towards the players overall total).

Holliday was up first and he collected two HRs. Ortiz hit four and Fielder hit five (in a row). With Ortiz & Fielder advancing, this set up an all lefties derby.

My picks for round two were Robinson Cano and Prince Fielder.

Ortiz got a little break from the swing off and led off round two. He connected for four long balls, bringing his total to 9. His longest HR of round two was 433”.

Cano followed Ortiz. He crushed 12 homers, bringing his overall total to 20. Gonzalez, who hadn’t hit in well over an hour, was next. He hit 11 bombs to make his overall total 20.

Fielder closed out round two with four dingers. His total was nine overall. Both Ortiz and Fielder were eliminated.

The final round was between Gonzalez and Cano. Red Sox vs. Yankee. And boy did they put on a show! This was easily the most entertaining derby I’ve ever watched.

Gonzalez belted another 11 home runs, though the totals from the first two rounds didn’t count in the finals.

Cano easily reached 11. Once number 11 left the park, Cano’s dad came over to hug his son. Viewers could hear him say “uno mas” to his son. His son responded “I love you, dad.” (cue the chills and multiple “Field of Dreams” references) He even dedicated one of the home runs to his mom, who was watching in the stands. Cano didn’t swing at his dad’s first pitch, but he connected on the next for number 12 and the HR Derby title. He was mobbed by his dad and teammates.

It was a feel good moment and the stadium went wild. Maybe the captains should continue to choose the participants because the Derby was entertaining for all, even the ones who only watch baseball at the All Star break and during the World Series.

Congrats, Robinson Cano.

All Star Shuffle

Looks like all those “snubs” are now the “stars”. Eleven players have been announced as replacements for Tuesday’s All Star Game.
Scott Rolen replaces Chipper Jones (had surgery on torn meniscus)
Adrian Beltre replaces ARod (having surgery on torn meniscus)
Andrew McCutchen replaces Ryan Braun (strained left calf)
Pablo Sandoval replaces Jose Reyes (strained left hamstring)
Miguel Montero replaces Placido Polanco (bulging disc)
The following pitchers are being replaced because they pitched on Sunday.
Craig Kimbrel replaces Matt Cain
Kevin Correia replaces Cole Hamels
Alexi Ogando replaces James Shields
Michael Pineda replaces Justin Verlander
Ricky Romero replaces King Felix (Jon Lester was next to be added, but is on the DL, so Romero gets the nod)

David Robertson has also been added, but it isn’t clear who he is replacing (Jeter?).
Reyes, Hamels, Lester, Verlander, Shields, Sabathia (added to the list, but can’t participate due to pitching on Sunday) and Hernandez are still recognized as All Stars, thus they can participate in festivities.

Jered Weaver has been named the AL starter while Roy Halladay has been named the NL starter.

Derek Jeter, who was healthy enough to go 5-5 and reach the 3,000 hit mark on Saturday, is now not healthy enough to play in the Mid Summer Classic. He’s not even going to attend the festivities (I guess he can’t “rest” his strained groin in Phoenix). I’m irritated by this for a few reasons. You get injured and miss several games due to said injury. Yet, you come back long enough to reach the 3,000 hit mark before the first half of the season is over. Not only do you reach this incredible distinction, you surpass it three times. But, now you need to go back to “resting” your injury? The fans voted you in. It’s not supposed to be a popularity contest, but in some cases it still is. Yes, Jeter has the numbers to back up his selection. But, fans voted him in to see him play, in part, because he’s popular. I still believe that being an All Star is a huge honor and shouldn’t be ignored. Ryan Braun is injured and he’s still going to Phoenix because he feels like he owes it to the fans who put him there. Jeter staying in New York furthers the thought of those who believe he’s a prima donna, just like his teammate, A Rod (who is out of the ASG due to having surgery). And Jeter held out for more money at the beginning of the season. By foregoing the ASG and its events, he once again looks like a money grubbing diva. Who cares that fans want to see you amongst the rest of MLB’s elite because you have an even bigger bank account and can’t be bothered with showing up? It makes him seem like a sellout.

On top of all that, he’s 37. He’s not going to play forever. His career is dwindling down and with injuries, may not play as long as he thinks. Or his numbers may start to slip and fans may not vote him in. Or they might remember being snubbed this year, so why waste your votes if he’s going to no show? There are many other worthy players would love to take his place at the ASG.

Feel free to read this article by ‘Duk who wonders if Jeter should play or skip the ASG.

Should Derek Jeter be making an appearance at All-Star Game?

Also, I wanted to let you know that the Taco Bell Legends & Celebrity Softball Game airs TONIGHT after the HR Derby on ESPN. It was played yesterday and I mistakenly thought it aired last night. Sorry about that.

If you have Twitter, all of the HR Derby participants will be tweeting LIVE on the FIELD (Logan Morrison has already tweeted about his jealousy of this fact) DURING the Derby. Go here to get the players Twitter info. As always, you can follow me: @Samantha_1675.

Happy Friday! Here are some fun facts for you.

Barry Zito is now 3-0 since coming of the DL. And he got rid of that creepy mustache (and now CM Punk has it. Brandon Flowers had it first. ). Glad I kept him on my ESPN fantasy baseball team & now he’s on my Yahoo teams. He’s typically been a better pitcher the second half of the season. Fingers crossed.

Two of my favorite things will be coming together on Sunday AND Monday. Baseball & Jason Aldean. Aldean is playing in the Taco Bell Legends & Celebrity Softball Game on Sunday night. It’s at 8 PM on ESPN.

Here’s a link to the rest of the lineup (just saw that hottie Jesse Williams is also suiting up. SCORE!): http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/events/articles/2011/06/14/20110614mlb-all-star-celebrity-softball-game-roster-announced-phoenix.html” title

Monday is the Homerun Derby, live on ESPN at 8 pm.

AL Roster: Jose Bautista (Major League leader w/ 27), Robinson Cano, Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz.

NL Roster: Prince Fielder, Matt Holliday, Matt Kemp & Rickie Weeks.

Jason Aldean will also be performing at the Derby. Here’s hoping he wears a Braves hat & Braves shirt or jersey.

The All Star Game is LIVE at 8 PM on Fox (Tues., 7/12). Paul Konerko & Shane Victorino were voted in as the 34th man in their respective roster. However, Victorino is on the DL w/ a thumb injury. He will be replaced by Andre Either. Also bowing out are three Yankees: Mariano Rivera, A Rod (knee) and Derek Jeter (strained calf). No word yet on their replacements. Chipper Jones may possibly sit out as well. He received a cortisone injection and his knee is still bothering him.

Jordin Sparks will perofrm the National Anthem at the ASG. She sang it on July 4th and nailed it. Take that, Christina!

The ESPYS air live on ESPN at 9 PM. It will be hosted by the hilarious Seth Meyers. Braves sidewinding reliver, Peter Moylan tweeted a while back that he had been invited. Today, I asked him if he was presenting or just attending. This is his response:

@Samantha_1675 just attending

Shame on ESPN. Don’t they know how hilarious he is? He should host next year (it’s during the All Star Break). Still hoping he wears this:

And lastly, I’m still saddened by the death of Shannon Stone. He was the Rangers fan who was trying to catch a ball by his son’s favorite player, Josh Hamilton, and tragically fell to his death. Please pray for everyone involved. The Rangers have set up a memorial account for him. You can make donations at https://secure.mlb.com/tex/community/shannon_stone_fund.jsp
